Does Gemini app (personal Google account) train on your data?
Trains by default
Trains on business data unless you opt out.
Personal Google accounts (18+): Keep Activity is on by default, and with it on Google uses your chats to train generative AI models, with help from human reviewers. Audio and Gemini Live video/screenshares are not used by default.
Why this matters: Data used for training can't be pulled back out of a trained model, so opting out only protects what comes after. Why training matters →
Covers: Gemini app with a personal Google Account (free and Google AI subscriptions). Compliance fields (SOC 2, ISO, DPA, BAA) have not been checked yet for personal plans.

Trains on your data by default
Personal Google accounts (18+): Keep Activity is on by default, and with it on Google uses your chats to train generative AI models, with help from human reviewers. Audio and Gemini Live video/screenshares are not used by default.

“If you’re 18 or over, Keep Activity is on by default.”
- support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961 · checked Oct 17, 2026
“Google uses your activity to provide, develop, and improve its services (including training generative AI models), as well as to protect Google, its users, and the public with the help of human reviewers.”
Can you turn training off?
Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats being used for training unless you send feedback. It also turns off chat history and some Connected Apps. There is no separate training-only toggle on the pages checked.

“Your future chats won’t appear in your Activity, and won’t be used to train our AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback.”

“Some Connected Apps are unavailable when this setting is off.”
Data retention
Auto-delete can be set to 3 or 36 months, or off. With Keep Activity off, chats are still kept 72 hours.

“Your activity is auto-deleted after 18 months. You can change this to 3 or 36 months, or choose not to auto-delete.”

“Future chats are still saved for 72 hours so Gemini can respond to you, process your feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the public.”
Retention after you delete
Deleting activity does not delete chats already sent to reviewers. Those are disconnected from your account.
- support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961 · checked Oct 17, 2026
“Chats reviewed by human reviewers (and related data like your language, device type, location info, or feedback) are not deleted when you delete your activity. Instead, they are retained for up to three years.”
Human review of chats
A subset of chats is reviewed by humans, including service providers, to improve Google services. Turning off Keep Activity stops this for future chats, but review for safety/abuse continues even with it off or in temporary chats.
